The Presidio Archaeology Lab, operated by the Presidio Trust, explores what’s beneath it all…the extraordinary historical record just under our feet. Archaeological research is part of nearly every project at the Presidio and reveals who lived here and how things changed over centuries.
While archaeology studies the past, it is a lively and engaging part of the Presidio’s present. A state-of-the-art lab and curation facility is now preparing to open on the Main Post next to a newly rehabilitated Officers’ Club. Visitors can also see recently discovered features at El Polin Spring, an outdoor classroom revealing the Presidio’s history.
The Presidio Archaeology Lab undertakes research with academic partners, hosts educational programs for school children, offers workshops for professional archaeologists, and will soon launch a new volunteer program. Stay tuned!
