Parks and public lands are civic spaces for everyone. They’re essential for well-being, health, recreation, and reflection. So from the beginning we designed the Tunnel Tops along with the community.
In 2014, we kicked off the “imagine” phase to invite the public’s ideas. In 2015, the public began working with James Corner Field Operations to shape what the Presidio Tunnel Tops will look and what people can do there. More than 10,000 people attended workshops and tours, shared comments and ideas, visited the website, and dropped into the Project Design Lab.
Now that we’re getting ready to open Tunnel Tops in late 2021, we’ll work toward breaking down barriers to access and inclusion so everyone feels welcome and safe in our parks. And we’ll work with the public so communities are designing their own experiences at the Tunnel Tops.
