Presidio of San Francisco (September 7, 2011) — The Presidio Trust is joining the nationwide effort to inspire millions of Americans to voluntarily engage in service in observance of the upcoming 10-year Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

As part of the National Day of Service and Remembrance, the Trust, in partnership with HandsOn Bay Area (HOBA), is hosting a volunteer day on Sunday, September 11 from 10 am to 1 pm. Volunteers will be aiding habitat restoration efforts near Mountain Lake, removing non-native shrubs from an area known as Park Scrub, which will become a habitat for the endangered San Francisco Lessingia.

“The Presidio has long been a place of service,” said Craig Middleton, Presidio Trust Executive Director. “We are honored to take part in the National Day of Service and Remembrance as a way of paying tribute to those lost on 9/11.”

The National Day of Service and Remembrance is part of HandsOn Bay Area’s “Season of Service,” a month-long campaign to engage 3,000 Bay Area volunteers in performing 9,011 hours of service. Other Presidio events include a screening of the film “Speaking in Tongues,” part of HOBA’s 9/11 commemorative film series “What it Means To Be an American,” on Thursday, September 8 at 7 pm; and a community disaster preparedness training on Thursday, September 15 at 7 pm.

The Presidio Trust was established by the United States Congress in 1996 to administer the Presidio of San Francisco, an urban national park site that is located at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. The areas overseen by the Trust include expansive open space and spectacular views, a 300-acre historic forest, and rare and endangered plants and wildlife. The National Park Service oversees the coastal areas of the Presidio. The park comprises nearly 6 million square feet of buildings, including 469 historic structures that contribute to the Presidio’s status as a National Historic Landmark District. The Presidio is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
