(SAN FRANCISCO, CA – AUGUST 10, 2021) — The Presidio Trust announced today that
Lodge at the Presidio, a historic national park hotel in the Presidio of San Francisco, has been awarded the esteemed LEED Gold green building certification, the second highest rating.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the most widely used green building rating system in the world and an international symbol of excellence. Through design, construction, and operations practices that improve environmental and human health, LEED-certified buildings help make the world more sustainable.

“The Presidio is one of the largest and most ambitious historic preservation projects in the United States, and reusing historic buildings is one of the most sustainable things you can do,” says Robert Wallace, Architect/Associate Director of Building Rehabilitation at the Presidio Trust. “Over the last decade, we’ve achieved LEED certification on nearly 30 park buildings. When people enjoy a night at the Lodge, they’re experiencing how historic preservation and environmental sustainability go hand in hand.”

The Lodge at the Presidio achieved LEED Gold certification for implementing practical and measurable solutions in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. For nearly three years, the Presidio Trust project team, Architectural Resources Group (ARG), and Plant Construction meticulously transformed the 1890s colonial revival style military barrack into a 42-room hotel in accordance with the building principles of adaptive reuse.

The building underwent an environmentally sensitive rehabilitation using the most advanced architectural and construction techniques and materials. Reinforcing the brick building through a state-of-the-art seismic strengthening process utilizing carbon and glass fibers conserved a large amount of waste and energy. Water-efficient plumbing and landscaping have resulted in 40% less than average water usage. Energy efficient “on-demand” power in the guestrooms is key card activated, saving energy when guest rooms are not in use. The original windows were restored and upgraded with weather stripping and sound reducing glass. Whenever possible, the building’s existing features, including its hardwood floors, two grand staircases, and walls were preserved, along with the brick exterior and expansive porch. Inside, green materials were used throughout, from the carpets and paint to the insulation made from recycled denim scraps.

“We are so pleased to receive LEED Gold certification for the Lodge,” said Terry Haney, Director of Presidio Lodging. “Guests are increasingly attracted to sustainable travel options and will be pleased to know their lodging meets the highest environmental standards.”
