The Presidio Trust, an innovative federal agency created to save the Presidio, is seeking an Associate Director of Natural Resources to serve as our senior principal advisor in the management of vegetation, wildlife, sensitive and endangered species, exotic and invasive species, soils, ecological restoration, water quality, and all related natural resource areas.
Once an Army base, the Presidio is a unique national park located in San Francisco at the edge of the Golden Gate. With 1500 acres rich with history, nature, and open space, the Presidio contains hundreds of restored former military buildings animated by more than 3,000 residents and 200 companies, including high tech start-ups, innovative non-profits, and other organizations that offer a welcoming mix of visitor experiences. The park also offers a mosaic of wildlife communities, including the newly re-introduced native Pacific chorus frog, Forktail damselflies, California Floater mussels, Western Pond turtle, stickleback, over 30 butterfly species, 60 bee species, and one of the most diverse communities of migratory birds in the world with over 200 different species spotted. The Presidio also contains 991 acres of open space with 330 native plant species and 14 native plant communities, historic gardens and forests, restored and remnant wetlands, sand dunes, grasslands, a freshwater lake, and a salt marsh. On any given day at the Presidio, you'll find organizations pursuing new ideas, scientists conducting research, and people of all ages volunteering, learning, playing, and exploring.

- Direct an intricate program of natural resource management involving sensitive/complex issues.
- Represent the Trust and the Presidio on resource stewardship issues. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with local, state, and federal agencies; and the public.
- Attend management and scientific conferences and other events to exchange information and advance advocacy for park stewardship. Make presentations in public gatherings.
- Maintain and facilitate updated natural resource management plans to insure preservation, protection, and enhancement of natural resources. Develop, coordinate, and preview plans that affect the flora, fauna and natural resources of the Presidio.
- Develop work plans and schedules, scopes of work, cost estimates, and proposals/grants. Obtain specific kinds of work and services through competitive contract and acquisition channels.
- Develop and implement long range plans for the inventory, evaluation, documentation, preservation, research, and interpretation of natural resources.
- Coordinate park resource management programs with those on adjacent lands to achieve broad protection strategies and prevent human impacts. Develop and maintain peer relationships with researchers, subject matter experts and resource managers of other agencies (particularly the National Park Service), cooperating universities, and other entities to encourage and facilitate cooperative regional resources management strategies.
- Design, develop, test, and implement scientific monitoring protocols to identify, evaluate, and conduct long-term monitoring of resources. Write new monitoring documents that define monitoring techniques and develop methods for future refinements of protocols.
- Based on results of inventories, in-depth studies, and monitoring, develop and conduct complex, scientifically credible protection, mitigation, and restoration projects needed to restore and maintain critical habitats, native plant and animal communities, landscapes and physical resources.
- Indirectly oversee volunteers and interns supporting natural resources activities and operations.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field AND at least five years of relevant work experience.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents; and respond effectively orally or in writing to the most complex or sensitive inquiries or complaints.
- Ability to make effective presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and the Board of Directors.
- Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems associated with natural resources.
- Strong leadership, collaboration, and team building skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point.
- Work is usually conducted in an office setting, but periodically work is performed outdoors or in other locations across the Presidio. Outdoor work may require hiking over uneven terrain and coping with the normal situations and discomforts that occur in an urban forest or natural area.

- Experience working in community-based natural resource and hands-on education programs.
About the Presidio Natural Resources Program
Our Natural Resources Program is a thought-leader within the ecological community and diligently manages native plant conservation and wildlife, monitors water quality and erosion, and conducts natural resources research, continually challenging conventional thinking and creating innovative solutions to improve the Park's ecological health. We work closely with and share ideas with other innovative leaders in ecology, and engage our local communities in citizen science, ecosystem restoration, and the management of biodiversity within the park.
This position requires the completion of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics (OGE) Form 450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, both as a New Entrant into the position and annually thereafter. The purpose of the financial disclosure system is to assist employees and their agencies in avoiding conflicts between official duties and private financial interests or affiliations.
