Can we achieve world peace through dance? Presidio Dance Theatre's artistic director Sherene Melania thinks so. She believes in the universal healing powers of dance to create connection and dialogue, and she's leading the charge to inspire social harmony by way of her non-profit performing dance company and school located on the Main Post.
Founded in 1998 by Judy Bretschneider, Robert Christian Leefeldt, and Nancy Johnson, Presidio Dance Theatre is dedicated to preserving historic dance traditions from across the world, passing them down to students of its award-winning school, and bringing them to new audiences through powerful and inspiring performances.
The company performs three signature productions in San Francisco every year, as well as various community engagement concerts in the city and around the world. True to its message of human connection and cross-cultural understanding, Presidio Dance Theatre collaborates with international artists and arts organizations for its rich, multi-cultural dance programs. The company also gives philanthropic performances for underserved public school children and humanitarian organizations like UNESCO and the International Red Cross.
Presidio Dance Theatre also offers classes for dancers of all ages and skill levels, as well as youth summer camps and ballet intensives. Its renowned performance-based school teaches traditional Russian Vaganova-style ballet, folk, and character dance, as well as more modern styles of performance, like tap, hip-hop, musical theatre, fencing, and pantomime.
