When you think of the Presidio, mountain climbing might not be the first thing that comes to mind…but maybe it should be. Planet Granite, located at Crissy Field, is an indoor climbing, yoga, and fitness facility. It opened its doors in 2008 inside a former Army motor pool building. Fitness junkies come here for its 45-foot high climbing walls and 25,000 square feet of state-of-the-art climbing terrain – all with amazing views of the waterfront through the enormous north-facing windows.
This is a great gym for all ages and all experience levels. Beginners can take introduction to belay lessons to learn the ropes; lessons include gear rental and a day pass to the gym. More experienced climbers will enjoy the wide variety of routes, cracks, and terrains, which are updated regularly.
Planet Granite features two yoga studios, a full line of well-maintained cardio and strength equipment, and catwalks to stretch and work out. It also offers fitness classes and personal trainers.
This gym has a strong community vibe, made stronger by its friendly, experienced, and approachable staff. Through its Planet Granite Gives Back campaign, the company donates $1 per member every month to a cause related to climbing, the community, or the environment. Planet Granite also hosts member parties and other fun events for members to get to know each other.
