Located above the Pacific Ocean at the Presidio’s highest point, Rob Hill offers an unforgettable national park camping experience.

Generations of people have slept under the stars at the Presidio’s Rob Hill, one of just two campgrounds in San Francisco.

Open for public tent camping from April 1 to October 31, Rob Hill offers four group campsites that each can welcome up to 30 people. Sites must be reserved in advance through Recreation.gov. In addition to providing easy access to Presidio trails and views, each campsite comes with amenities like picnic tables and grills, as well as access to indoor restrooms.

Fall asleep to the sound of a hooting Great Horned Owl and then wake up to the splendor of a Presidio sunrise at Rob Hill Campground. Located next to the Bay Area Ridge Trail and the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, Rob Hill offers easy access to other Presidio destinations.

Accessibility at Rob Hill Campground

The campground parking lot includes four spaces for those with mobility limitations. Access the campground via a paved 200-foot wheelchair accessible path. Two campsites – Ishmen and Yunahia – offer a raised pad that can accommodate tents for wheelchair users.

Make the most of your time overlooking the edge of the continent by taking a walk on the nearby Batteries to Bluffs Trail, which connects to the Sand Ladder at Baker Beach.

Camping Near San Francisco

You don’t have to drive to Yosemite or Yellowstone to enjoy national park camping. Rob Hill’s cypress-shrouded four acres make you feel like you’re deep in the wilderness though you’re just minutes from downtown San Francisco. Its group campsites are great for large gatherings of family and friends.

As of 2023, reservations cost $92 per site, per night (Sunday through Thursday nights) and $140 per site, per night (Friday and Saturday nights). Additionally, discounted rates of $75 per site, per night are available to active and retired military personnel.

Facilities and Amenities

Rob Hill has four group campsites, with a maximum of 30 people per site. Each campsite features a fire ring, a charcoal BBQ grill, two food storage lockers, and four picnic tables. Campers have access to water, restrooms, refuse receptacles, bike racks, and four reserved parking spots per permit. Making National Park Camping Accessible for All

The Monarch Week Program provides underrepresented communities from the San Francisco Bay Area an opportunity to experience camping at Rob Hill. During the 2024 camping season, the last full week of every month will be held back from public reservations. Learn about eligibility and how to apply.

No, day use reservations are not available at Rob Hill Campground. Reservations can only be made for overnight camping.

Wood and charcoal fires are permitted only in the BBQs and fire pits provided in each campsite. Collecting live, downed, or dead wood is prohibited. Campers are allowed to bring in their own wood from outside the Presidio. Please extinguish all fires completely, with water, after use.

A discounted rate of $75 per site, per night is available to active and retired military personnel. Email proof of eligibility to camp@presidiotrust.gov after you have made your reservation and at least one week prior to your check-in date. Please include your reservation confirmation number and check-in date in the subject line of your email. If your request is approved, the difference will be refunded to you. Discount requests that are submitted less than one week in advance of check-in cannot be guaranteed.

Acceptable forms of proof include a copy of a Military ID card, Veteran ID card, driver’s license with a veteran designation, issued identification card, DD214, or a membership card to a veteran’s group (such as VFW, American Legion, AMVETS, etc.). Please redact any sensitive information (such as a Social Security Number) that appears on any document that you attach. Name on the proof of service must match the name of the primary occupant listed on the reservation.

Monarch Butterfly Count

Each year, Bay Area naturalists head to Rob Hill Campground for the Western Monarch Butterfly Count. Army records show the monarch has come to the Presidio to overwinter and mate in Rob Hill’s nearby eucalyptus trees since the beginning of the 19th century.
