Battery Chamberlin Open House

Saturday, Nov 03, 11:00 AM - 03:00 PM At Battery Chamberlin Offered by:

Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy

Built near Baker Beach in 1904, Battery Chamberlin was constructed to accommodate the lighter, stronger, more powerful coastal defense artillery developed in the late nineteenth centry. Rifled and built for rapid fire, this 6-inch gun sits upon a disappearing carriage where a 30,000 pound counterweight raises it into firing position.  We encourage you to volunteer to help us "load" the gun and see first-hand how this mechanism works. Continuous demonstrations take place between 11 am and 3 pm on the first full weekend of every month.  Accompanying the gun is our Coast Artillery Museum which details coastal defense of the Bay Area from 1776 to 1974.

No reservations required.
