Last month in honor of Black History Month, U.S. Senator Kamala Harris introduced a resolution in Congress to honor Buffalo Soldiers, the first all-black Army units, for serving the country with valor and distinction. ABC 7 Bay Area visited the Presidio and interviewed National Park Service Ranger Rik Penn, who works at the park’s
Fort Point National Historic Site. Penn leads Buffalo Soldiers tours, and he’s been working with historian John William Templeton to rally support for a Buffalo Soldiers trail. He says, "I like to think that there are holes in the fabric of our national history, and certain stories will fall through those holes.” Penn works to give voice to the Buffalo Soldiers’ narratives silenced in national history.
