The Greatest: Five Ways to Love Mother Earth

Wednesday, Apr 12, 2017 Category Nature and Science

In honor of Earth Day 2017, here are five great ways to celebrate Mother Earth while visiting the Presidio.

1. Volunteer on Earth Day

On Saturday, April 22, 2017, join us for the Presidio's annual volunteer event celebrating Earth Day – it's part of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area's Earth Week celebration and the Golden Gate National Parks Day of Service.

Register for Presidio Earth Day on Saturday, April 22, 2017, 9am – 12pm >>

2. Keep Practical Earth-Friendly Tips in Mind

The Presidio team is working hard to operate the park in a way that respects the earth. This includes recycling and composting park trash and debris, especially at big events like Presidio Picnic (see photo); rehabilitating historic buildings using green materials and practices; and caring for park landscapes using "Bay Friendly" techniques that save water and increase habitat for pollinators.

Here are a few tips from our Sustainability Team on ways you can be "green" when you visit the Presidio:

3. Celebrate the Planet through Art

On April 22, 2017, come to the Tides Thoreau Center for the 9th annual ArtSeed Earth Day Art-A-Thon, a 10-hour art- and music-making marathon for kids of all ages (it's a benefit for ArtSeed students). Or try your hand at one of our free Creative Family Fun activities at the Presidio Officers' Club. These are weekly drop-in, craft-making activities for kids based on the Presidio's natural and cultural heritage. On Earth Day, we're featuring Feathered Friends, where kids can learn about the Presidio's 200 species of birds and make colorful paper bird art.

4. Go Where History Meets Nature

In honor of Earth Day, join us for "Back into the Earth Day" with the Presidio Archaeology Team on Saturday, April 22, 2017. Archaeologists and volunteers will spend the day digging into the park's history as the team prepares the El Presidio archaeology site for an upcoming summer research project. Drop in any time between 9 am and noon at Pershing Square in front of the Presidio Officers' Club. No registration is required. Shovels are provided.

5. Learn More About the Environment

In honor of Earth Day and in collaboration with the International Ocean Film Festival, join us for a screening of Bad Tidings on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at the Presidio Officers' Club. Winner of the New Jersey Film Festival, Dan Natale's first film reveals the controversial effects of adapting to climate change, focusing on the danger shoreline residents experience as sea levels rise. After the screening, there will be a Q+A with the filmmaker.

Register to attend the screening and Q+A on Thursday, April 20, 2017, at 6pm >>
