Presidio Eats: Presidio Patios

Thursday, Aug 04, 2016 Category Food and Drink

Even though our weather can sometimes be a bit chilly, San Franciscans LOVE outdoor dining. If you're looking for a new place to eat and drink al fresco, look no further than the Presidio. Many of the Presidio's restaurants offer a patio, porch, or bench seating - some with the added bonus of spectacular views of the bay, the forest, and other beautiful park landmarks. Here are some of our favorite spots in the Presidio to enjoy dining outdoors.

Arguello Restaurant

If you've planned a day at the Presidio Officers' Club, leave time to enjoy their signature restaurant. Arguello is a great place to experience the Presidio's Mexican heritage, and their patio is one of the Presidio's great discoveries. Under the direction of James Beard award-winning chef Traci Des Jardins, the menu includes everything from classic tacos to some of the best guacamole in the city. Come by early in the week to enjoy "Make Tuesdays Better" – a special featuring $10 taco plates and $28 margarita pitchers from 11 am to 4 pm. After the sun goes down, wrap up in one of their wool blankets and snuggle up next to one of the fire pits for some dining under the stars.

The Warming Hut

The Warming Hut is the perfect place to take a break during your stroll to and from the Golden Gate Bridge. No doubt their Ghirardelli Hot Chocolate is a must - and a home-grown favorite - on a foggy day of sightseeing around Crissy Field. But for the rare balmy day, this is one of the best places in the Bay to park your bike and enjoy a refreshing lunch – a spinach salad with fruit and rich feta cheese is sure to cool you off. The Warming Hut has seating right outside their café, with views toward San Francisco Bay. It's a wonderful place for people watching, too.

The General Store at the Presidio Golf Course

Who doesn't love a picnic in a national park, complete with the smell of barbecue? If this is your idea of a good time, too, head to the General Store at the Presidio Golf Course where you'll be feasted with grilled hot dogs, pulled pork, tri-tip, grilled chicken sandwiches, and more. They keep it pretty casual at the General Store, which makes it the perfect pit-stop between rounds of golf or during a hike through the park. Don't forget to say hi to Vinny, the General Store's grill master – he keeps his chops sharp, and the charcoal hot.

One of the best patios in the park just might be the easiest to find – we're talking about the one at TRANSIT restaurant. Located at the Presidio Transit Center on the Main Post (where the PresidiGo Shuttle and the MUNI 43 bus stops), here you'll experience a spectacular view of the San Francisco Bay, artisan pizzas to die for, wine and Fort Point Brewery beer on tap, and Bavarian pretzels as big as your head. TRANSIT is the perfect spot for a quick breakfast, a leisurely lunch, an afternoon beverage, or a giant freshly baked cookie.

Presidio Social Club

Presidio Social Club's summer "biergarten," hosted on select Wednesdays on their back patio, is a new park favorite. They offer everything from smoked sausages to beef ribs, pulled pork, 13 hour (!) smoked brisket, and "The Holy Smokes" (which basically means a bit of everything). Wash it all down with a Fort Point beer (brewed right here in the Presidio). Not available to indulge on a weeknight? Don't worry! Every Sunday through October 8, 2016, the club offers up their patio "Pig Roast" with whole roast pigs, Mai Tais, and new seasonal desserts. Check their web calendar for other outdoor happenings.

Sessions at the Presidio

At Sessions' beautiful patio, you can gaze upon the Palace of Fine Arts dome and the Golden Gate Bridge while overlooking a meadow designed by the late, great landscape architect Lawrence Halprin. This is a great spot to visit after a hike through the Presidio. On Saturdays and Sundays from 11 am until 2:30 pm, enjoy bottomless beers or mimosas during their weekend bottomless brunch deal. See their website for their hours of operation and a peek at their menu.
