Docents, Ambassadors and Greeters

The Presidio Trust offers various opportunities for volunteers to share their knowledge and love of the park with visitors. Volunteer docents, ambassadors, and greeters are a vital link between the public and the Presidio, helping visitors of all ages experience and enjoy this magnificent place.

Art Docents

The Presidio is home to a growing art program that helps visitors experience and understand unique aspects of the park. Volunteer docents introduce installations to the public, lead tours, and provide general assistance that helps visitors enjoy a great day in the Presidio.

Indoor and outdoor positions are available in a stationary or active setting. In particular, docents help share the Presidio’s collection of Andy Goldsworthy sculptures. Tree Fall, the artist’s most recent addition to the Presidio, is located indoors on the Presidio’s Main Post and is open regularly for docent tours. Docents also lead walking tours to Goldsworthy’s outdoor pieces, Spire and Wood Line.

A series of initial training sessions (lectures, videos, hikes, and tours) is required. Docents are part of a welcoming community of Presidio volunteers and have access to many ongoing social and learning opportunities. The monthly volunteer commitment is approximately six hours.

Heritage Docents + Welcome Desk Greeters at the Presidio Officers' Club

The Presidio Trust is recruiting enthusiastic individuals to become part of a team of volunteers welcoming visitors to the Presidio Officers' Club, San Francisco's most historic building. The newly renovated Officers' Club is now a multifaceted cultural destination to welcome and inform the public about the Presidio with the help of volunteers.

The Officers' Club features heritage exhibits throughout, including a Presidio Heritage Gallery with interactive exhibits that provide context, encourage exploration, and establish a deeper understanding of the Presidio and its vital role in San Francisco and world history. The gallery highlights the compelling human stories from the Presidio's past, uses immersive media to enliven the experience, and displays one-of-a kind artifacts, while encouraging visitors to make connections with their lives in the present.

Heritage Docents and Welcome Desk Greeters help welcome visitors to the Officers' Club and the Presidio. Welcome Desk Greeters interact with visitors at the welcome desk, answer questions, and provide information to help visitors understand and enjoy the park. Heritage Docents receive more intensive training to engage with the public in a deeper way through interpretation of the historic Presidio Officers’ Club, Heritage Gallery, and archaeological site located on the Main Post.

Trail Ambassadors

Trail Ambassadors provide a welcoming and informed presence for visitors on Presidio trails and in other high use areas of the park such as the Main Post. Ambassadors help visitors find their way, suggest hikes and bike rides, support trail etiquette, share information about park events and programs, and offer general assistance that helps guests enjoy a great day in the Presidio.

Ambassadors also provide park managers with feedback on their observations and guest comments, helping to ensure an ever-improving experience for visitors.

The Presidio trail system is quite diverse, and ambassadors may serve on more “rugged” or “urban” areas depending on their interests. A series of initial training sessions (lectures, videos, hikes, and tours) is required. Ambassadors will be part of a welcoming community of Presidio volunteers and will have access to many ongoing social and learning opportunities. The monthly volunteer commitment is approximately four hours.
