April Volunteer Highlights

A dedicated ten-person AmeriCorps team, stationed in the Presidio until Memorial Day, has been working hard on a variety of projects. April highlights included building raised planter beds in the Fort Scott Community Garden, replacing outdated sprinkler systems in our ball fields (which helps the Trust conserve more water!), and planting hundreds of native plants in our habitat restoration zones within the Tennessee Hollow Watershed. Thanks AmeriCorps! We look forward to another exciting month ahead before this incredible group moves on to their next destination. See pictures of them in action >>

Along with our regularly scheduled drop-in programs, we have several special events coming up - Join us!

International Compost Awareness Week
Thursday, May 8, 10 am
Our park operations depend on volunteers. But we also need the homegrown compost provided by the Presidio Trust Waste Reduction team. This organic blend mixes with our soils to create nutrient rich environments in which our plants can thrive. Please join the team this month at the Compost Yard as we celebrate International Compost Awareness Week and receive a facility tour, while assisting with maintenance and operations of the site. To sign-up, send an email to volunteer@presidiotrust.gov.

Endangered Species Weekend
Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18
Did you know that the Presidio and Golden Gate National Parks are home to more federally protected species than any other unit of the National Park System in continental North America? Learn about the park's endangered plant and animal species and help restore their habitat by participating in volunteer projects at the Presidio and other locations throughout the Golden Gate National Parks during Endangered Species Weekend.

National Trails Day
Saturday, June 7, 9 am
Join us for a day of stewardship along Presidio trails, forests, and pathways. Activities will include maintaining trails, tending trees in adjacent reforestation zones, and restoring nearby native habitat. An optional guided hike along the trails around El Polin Spring will take place from 1 pm to 2 pm. All ages welcome.

Care for the Campground
Tuesday, April 6, 10 am to 1 pm
Meet us at the Inspiration Point Overlook and we'll cruise out to the Rob Hill Campground for a springtime session of site cleanup at one of the shining jewels of the Presidio. Weeding, mulching, and some light pruning are on the docket as we work to keep our public campground spiffed up and looking sharp. First time volunteers welcome, no experience required! Rain or shine. Ages 10 and up.

Grow the Presidio Forest
Friday, May 2: Redwood Reforestation Site
Friday, May 9: Julius Kahn Reforestation Site
It's May and everything's grown up with the spring rains. Come and help us expand irrigation rings around the stretching tree canopies, and help spread organic mulch around the base of these budding forests. We'll also be pulling weeds (of course!) and will proudly be celebrating the 5th anniversary of our Forest Stewards program on May 9th. Grab a hat, put on your boots and join us! Meet at the Inspiration Point Overlook. Rain or shine. All ages welcome.

Volunteer for BART (the other BART!
Tuesday, May 13: Bay Area Ridge Trail (BART)
Join the Trail Stewards as we continue our work along the Bay Area Ridge Trail (BART), which is part of a 550-mile loop tracing the highest points around San Francisco Bay, including the upper ridgeline of the Presidio. We will clean up the trail by raking up and removing green waste, and we'll also perform some light construction as we make infrastructure repairs and improvements. Meet at Inspiration Point Overlook. Rain or shine. Ages 15 and up.

Beautify Historic Gardens
Thursday, May 15: Revitalizing Historic Gardens in the Funston Neighborhood
The Presidio was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962, forever protecting the park's cultural landscape as it was first conceived by the U.S. Army. The Army adhered to creating a picturesque aesthetic including winding, tree-lined boulevards, forested ridges, and formally landscaped entrances. Today, the Funston Neighborhood still stands as the earliest Army-era homes built within the Presidio. We'll be leading our volunteers on sprucing up historic gardens around these federally protected architectural gems. Meet at 10 am at the Inspiration Point Overlook. Rain or shine. Ages 10 and up.
