February Volunteer Highlights

Thanks to the 100+ volunteers who participated in the Presidio's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service! Volunteers, park staff and interns planted native vegetation, spruced up a trail, turned compost piles, spread mulch, installed a fence, and filled 5 dump truck loads with weeds and green waste at Rob Hill Campground and nearby habitat restoration and garden sites.

Grow the Presidio Forest
Friday, February 6th: Lobos Reforestation Site
Friday, February 13th: Lobos Reforestation Site
The Presidio forest needs your help! Join our dedicated & fun community of volunteers as we enhance & pay respects to our urban trees, which provide so much benefit to the San Francisco Bay Area. The Forest Stewards will be replanting trees in the Lobos plantation as well as pulling back ice plant where it has become overgrown. Standard weeding and mulching work will follow, as we venture forth into 2015 with our fearless leaders (and Certified Arborists!), Chris and Ben.

Keep Our Trails Moving
Tuesday, February 10th: Lovers' Lane
In the 18th Century, as original Spanish El Presidio took shape at the Main Post, the shortest way to the pious - and passionate - possibilities of Yerba Buena was a footpath, later named Lovers' Lane. Today, Lovers' Lane is undergoing improvement, with new LED lighting fixtures installed this month. A section of the Lane in need of volunteer support is near the Presidio Gate, where we'll work to eliminate the detrimental effects of an adjacent unofficial trail that has developed over the years. Our work will ensure the public's safety & simultaneously protects our natural resources in the area. Please join us to keep our trails moving!

Prepare Presidio Firewood
Thursday, February 12th: Compost Yard
Join the Presidio's Waste Reduction team in preparing Presidio firewood for the thousands of Bay Area residents who flock to the Presidio campground each year. We strive to keep our wood source local to the Presidio! Come help sort and stack logs that will be used in campfires this summer and fall. Rain or shine. RSVP's are required - please RSVP by emailing volunteer@presidio.gov

Perfecting the Promenade
Friday, February 20th: Presidio Promenade
The Presidio Promenade runs from the Lombard Gate to the Golden Gate Bridge & passes through all of the various exciting landscapes in the park. Volunteers will assist landscaping staff in spiffing up the most visible section of the Promenade within the Presidio's Letterman District. These lovely gardens occupy a gentle slope and contain a wide variety of strategically planted ornamentals, all beneath the breathtaking skyline canopy of eucalyptus and redwood trees.
