Special Park Uses and Permits
Camping at Rob Hill
Rob Hill Campground is the only overnight campsite within San Francisco. It is situated at the Presidio’s highest point in a stand of eucalyptus trees overlooking Baker Beach and the Pacific Ocean. The group campsite was expanded and improved with support from the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund. The camping season is typically April to October of each year, and a reservation and permit are required. Reserve a group campsite.
Picnic Areas
The Presidio features several picnic areas. Picnic sites at Crissy Field and Baker Beach are managed by the National Park Service Special Park Uses Group (SPUG). Permits are required for groups of 50 people or more.
Picnic sites at Immigrant Point Overlook and El Polin Spring are managed by the Presidio Trust. The sites are suitable for small groups only and are available on a first-come, first-served basis (no reservations or permits required). If you have questions about your group’s size or planned activities at these sites, contact Presidio Trust Special Events at (415) 561-5444 or
The lawn area at the Log Cabin is also available for rent through the Presidio Trust Special Events office and can accommodate large groups. For more information about the Log Cabin, contact Presidio Trust Special Events at (415) 561-5444 or
Playing Fields
Fort Scott Field, located near the Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza, is available for public use through the Presidio Trust Special Events office. Scheduling for organized leagues or recurring use is determined through a lottery. Letters of explanation, reservation sheets, rules, and applications are mailed in spring for the October through September use period. A limited number of “one time use” reservations may also available. To register your team or league for the date selection competition or to learn about other availability, please contact Presidio Trust Special Events at (415) 561-5444. Parking for Special Events
Limited parking may be available to support events and activities hosted by Presidio tenants and other community organizations. A permit must be obtained in order to reserve specific areas or numbers of parking spaces. A $10 per space (per day) rental fee, a $340 permit filing fee, and a certificate of insurance are required. Additional costs may include on-site traffic monitoring, barricades, and directional signage. Parking permits are arranged through the Presidio Trust Special Events at (415) 561-5444 or
Races, Runs, Festivals, and Other Activities
Some special events and activities require a permit because of the impacts they may have on the park’s resources or visitors. Examples include organized sporting events, concerts, festivals, and public spectator attractions.
Special Events typically serve private groups rather than the public at large, affect traffic patterns, or require added law enforcement. Some elements that could trigger the need for a special event permit include:
  • Alcohol sales
  • Attendance of more than 100 people
  • Amplified music
  • Road closures, detours, or intermittent stoppages
  • Tents or canopies
  • Valet parking or shuttle service
  • Barbeque grills in excess of 805 square inches
  • Use of liquid propane in excess of 5 gallons
  • Portable toilets
  • Rental sales operators
  • Underground utility clearances
  • Use of generators
Presidio Trust Special Events manages special events within the Presidio’s interior lands (all parts of the Presidio except Baker Beach and Crissy Field). To propose a special event, contact us at (415) 561-5444.
