Doyle Drive is a critical section of Route 101 that connects San Francisco to the Golden Gate Bridge along the Presidio’s northern waterfront. More than 91,000 vehicles use Doyle Drive every weekday.
Originally constructed in 1936, the roadway is nearing the end of its useful life. The Federal Highway Administration, the California Department of Transportation, and the San Francisco County Transportation Authority are leading the public planning effort to replace Doyle Drive. The purpose of the project is to improve the roadway’s seismic, structural, and traffic safety, while better incorporating the roadway into the setting of the Presidio as a national park. The Presidio Trust is a cooperating agency and has been an active participant in the planning process.
Project Alternatives
The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) addresses a number of alternatives for replacing Doyle Drive. The Presidio Trust is in support of Alternative 5: Presidio Parkway Alternative. The Trust believes that this approach, which places the roadway in underground tunnels at two critical points, would reopen Presidio vistas and reconnect the waterfront to the Main Post and the rest of the Presidio. On September 26, 2006, the San Francisco County Transportation Authority’s Board of Commissioners unanimously selected the Presidio Parkway as the Preferred Alternative for the South Access to the Golden Gate Bridge, Doyle Drive Project.
Upcoming Milestones
The Federal Highway Administration, the California Department of Transportation, and the San Francisco County Transportation Authority anticipate that the Final Environmental Impact Statement will be released in spring 2007, followed by the Record of Decision.
