Serves as director of the Presidio Archaeology Program which includes Excavation & Analysis; Curation & Exhibition; Research & Publication; Site Preservation & Interpretation; and Education & Outreach. Responsible for making significant contributions to execution of long-term strategic and annual archaeological goals; providing expertise and direction for compliance with NEPA and Section 106 of the NHPA in support of major projects and planning initiatives; planning for the future Presidio Archaeology Center at the Main Post, a facility that will build on existing programs that currently support a number of volunteer, visitor, and educational opportunities. Has significant responsibilities for developing public presentations and scholarly publications that are engaging and effectively communicate the Archaeology Center’s goals, research, and findings to multiple audiences. Directly supervises an archeologist and curator; indirectly supervises undergraduate and graduate student interns, volunteers, and contractors. Full time position with benefits.
Requires graduate degree in anthropology with specialization in historical archaeology and preferred emphasis in Spanish-colonial period cultures and 19th century US military communities, with firm understanding of prehistoric material culture and peoples of California and Bay Area; 10 years of full-time professional experience in the study of the historic period, including archaeological research, administration, and/or management; field and analytic experience in general North American archaeology, and demonstrated ability to carry research to completion; extensive knowledge and experience with federal preservation laws/regulations, including consultation experience with professional staff at the SHPO and ACHP; ability to develop methodologies/work plans to conduct inventory, evaluation, treatment and preservation of archaeological resources under Sections 106 and 110 of the NHPA, and ability and training to interpret and implement relevant sections of the ARPA and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act; demonstrated experience in developing creative treatment plans in collaboration for the preservation/interpretation of archaeological sites; ability to develop engaging publications and presentations of archaeological data that is easily understood and shared effectively with others; knowledge and demonstrated application of management and leadership acquired through on the job experience for program management and the administration of budgets, contracting, and personnel; ability to prepare scopes of work for archaeological services and government cost estimates, and to manage contractors and review their technical submittals and invoices; and current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification required for monitoring/excavation of archaeological resources associated with environmental remediation projects. Majority of field work is performed by subordinate staff, students, and contractors, but some work may require strenuous activity including walking transects on uneven terrain, excavating, and lifting/carrying heavy objects.
