Sections of Park Trail and Bay Area Ridge Trail Closed to Dog Walking

To reduce the potential for coyote/dog conflict, we’ve proactively closed large sections of the Park Trail and the Bay Area Ridge Trail to dog walking. This annual closure is temporary; we’ll reopen these trails to dog walking in fall after pupping season ends. All 24 miles of hiking trails in the Presidio are open to people.

The Presidio Joins San Francisco's City-Wide "Summer of Love" 50th Anniversary Celebration

SHARE

Presidio of San Francisco (May 08, 2017) – This summer, the Presidio joins a city-wide celebration of the 50th Anniversary of San Francisco’s “Summer of Love,” remembering the park’s unique role as a U.S. Army post just a few miles away from the epicenter of a social and political revolution. If, in 1967, the Summer of Love epitomized nonconformity, the Presidio symbolized the American status quo. That summer, the counterculture movement drew 100,000 young people to San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district to turn on, tune in and drop out, to step out of the mainstream, and to question and challenge everything from sexuality, dress, and hairstyles to music and art, race relations, and the Vietnam War. At the same time, many of their peers were called to military service nearby at the Presidio of San Francisco.

The Presidio was a key link in the projection of American military power into the Pacific, providing logistical and administrative support for operations in Vietnam. Yet, the war was controversial, and protests broke out across the entire Bay Area, including at the Presidio’s gates.

Summer of Love Events in the Presidio

Today the Presidio is a national park that welcomes all. This summer, the Presidio Trust will host a variety of themed events commemorating the summer of 1967, inviting public discussion and reflection on those interesting times. From craft-making and dancing to explorations of the work of cultural icons Joel Selvin and David Talbot, activities range from playful to thoughtful.

In addition, the three Presidio Foods restaurants will offer specialty cocktails for 50 days, from May 13 to July 1. All three took inspiration from the Scott McKenzie song “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)”: Arguello will serve the Scarlet Begonia (Lillet Rose, Lemon, Hibiscus, and Cava); The Commissary will serve The 1967 (Gin, Aperol, Rhubarb, Lemon, Cava); and TRANSIT will serve a Chamomile Mocha.

Programs are offered in partnership with SF Travel’s 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Summer of Love and the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love. Additional details about all Presidio events are at www.presidio.gov/events.
