If you're looking for a place to host the great American barbeque, look no further than Crissy Field's West Bluff Picnic Area. Located in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge, the views here are seriously breathtaking and will remind you why you make your home in the San Francisco Bay Area.
A hot spot for all kinds of festivities – from birthday parties to family gatherings to work get-togethers – West Bluff has everything you need for a great day outdoors. There are many large picnic tables here, along with BBQ pits for those with mad grilling skills. On a sunny weekend day, you will want to arrive early – very early – to grab a spot. Once you do you will be treated to views of Alcatraz, Angel Island, and the Marin Headlands.
West Bluff is an excellent base camp for a day at Crissy Field. Nearby you will find East Beach for sunbathing or dancing in the surf with the kids. The young and young-at-heart will also enjoy learning about the aquatic life of the bay at the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary Visitor Center or about amazing military architecture at Fort Point National Historic Site.
Many enjoy throwing Frisbees on the vast grassy field where airplanes first started landing a century ago. Keep in mind that the same bay breezes that carry those colorful disks could suddenly make you very chilly. Dress in layers as the fog could roll in at any moment.
Parking is immediately adjacent to West Bluff but in high demand. The PresidiGo Shuttle is another great option for accessing the area. Restrooms are located nearby near the Warming Hut, where you can also grab a delicious lunch if your picnic is impromptu – and a memento of your visit at their lovely gift shop. All proceeds benefit the park.
Planning to forego the intimate picnic and go big? Note that parties of more than 50 people require a permit. Contact the National Park Service Special Park Uses Group for details.
