The Presidio Trust, the National Park Service, the non-profit Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and community volunteers are making the Presidio a place for nature, wildlife, and people to thrive. The partners protect, preserve, monitor, maintain, and restore park habitats and ecosystems. This is done using the best scientific information in ways that invite education, volunteerism, and stewardship.
The program is guided by the Presidio Vegetation Management Plan, adopted in 2001 with extensive community participation.
What Does the Natural Areas Program Include?
Monitoring and protection of native plant communities and 16 rare and endangered plant species, including five protected by the Endangered Species Act; neo-tropical migrating birds that rest and nest at the Presidio; wildlife no longer seen elsewhere in San Francisco; and water resources such as Lobos Creek and Mountain Lake
Active restoration of natural areas, including the sites enhanced through the Presidio Trust’s Environmental Cleanup program. The Presidio Native Plant Nursery grows 60,000 plants each year to make this restoration possible.
Education and outreach to regional school students who participate in hands-on educational experiences; community-based volunteer habitat restoration programs from the Presidio Park Stewards Program to Save the Quail efforts; and Presidio residents and employees.
Scientific research, in partnership with scientific institutions, universities, and environmental organizations, to increase understanding of the Presidio’s natural systems.
