Lead in Soil

Due to the Army’s use of lead-based paint at the Presidio, the soil surrounding some Presidio buildings contains lead which the Trust is now removing.

The Trust is cleaning up all sites to residential and ecological-based standards as appropriate. The cleanup action for lead-contaminated soils is typically “clean closure,” which means that contaminated soil is removed and transported to a certified waste management facility outside the Presidio. In a few limited situations, the Trust is capping the lead contaminated soil in place.

The Trust’s Lead Based Paint (LBP) in soil cleanup work is guided by the Presidio-wide LBP Plan and the Presidio–wide LBP Technical Workplan (both dated June 2006). Available for review in the Presidio Trust Library, these documents provide an overview of the requirements the Trust follows when sampling and cleaning up lead in soils.
