Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

The Presidio is a former U.S. Army post that became a national park site after the Army decommissioned it in 1994. Today, the Presidio is a thriving community with park visitors, residents, and businesses of all kinds. There are more than 1,100 housing units within 24 neighborhoods throughout the park. Anyone can apply to live here.

All of our neighborhoods in the Presidio are pet friendly. We allow two pets per household with an additional $500 pet deposit and $50 rent per pet. Exception: no dogs are allowed in 41 Moraga (one cat allowed only).

Lease Terms, Rates, and Costs

We offer 9- and 12-month leases. In market rate units, 2- and 3-year leases are also offered. Rental rates and terms vary, so please speak with a leasing agent for details.

Application Process

The Presidio Trust offers housing preferences to full-time, non-temporary, Presidio-based employees. Learn about the options.

Please refer to our website or give us a call. Neighborhoods with immediate availability are marked as “Available Now” on the right-hand side of the page. Neighborhoods without current availability are marked as “Contact Us.” Please fill out and submit a Housing Interest Form to get into our system and stay updated about availability.

We invite you to fill out and submit a Housing Interest Form to get into our system. This lets us know what size of unit you need, what your price point is, and what specific neighborhood(s) you’re interested in. When a unit becomes available that fits the needs specified, we’ll send you an email to invite you to an open house. It’s important to keep your contact information current.

Presidio-based employees have first priority for housing, followed by members of the general public. Within the priority groups, units are then offered chronologically. Because of this and that interest changes daily, we are unable to tell you what your position is on the list. Once a unit becomes available and we assess interest from our Housing Interest Form database, we can then give you more information.

In order to offer you the housing you are truly interested in, please carefully complete the Housing Interest Form. We will offer you housing matching your specifications a maximum of three times. If you decline our third offer, your name will be removed from our database. We encourage you to call us to update your preferences. In the event you’ve been removed from our system, we welcome you to resubmit a new form.

Please view our Resident Selection Guidelines to learn about the selection process.

Transportation and Parking

With the exception of units in the Letterman Apartments and at 41 Moraga, each home in the Presidio comes with one designated parking space. Depending on the neighborhood, your designated parking space could be in a garage, driveway, carport, or numbered street parking stall. Additional parking is available in most neighborhoods starting at $75 per month. To see additional information on our residential parking program, click here.

Several Muni routes provide service directly to or near the Presidio. The Muni 43 stops at the Presidio Transit Center in the Main Post. The Muni 29 stops near the Baker Beach apartments. From there, you can hop on the free Presidio GO Shuttle, which connects you to destinations around the park as well as downtown San Francisco.

There are several electric car charging stations in the Presidio. The main bank of charging stations is located behind Building 103 Montgomery Street. There are also single charging stations at the Crissy Field Center as well as at Building 558 Presidio Boulevard. If you already live in the Presidio, you may also request the installation of an individual charging station at your home. Please click here for the link to the car charging station information. Please note that not all neighborhoods in the Presidio can accommodate this request.
