Wood Line Project

A sketch of the proposed Wood Line by Andy Goldsworthy. In November 2010 artist Andy Goldsworthy returns to the Presidio to create a new art installation entitled Wood Line. The piece will be nestled within the stand of eucalyptus between Lovers’ Lane and Presidio Boulevard. To create Wood Line, Goldsworthy will lay eucalyptus branches end to end on the ground to make a sinuous line that, in his words, “Draws the Place.” The wood is sourced from various Presidio projects which required tree removal, including Doyle Drive construction, environmental remediation, and habitat restoration.

Read a brochure describing Wood Line and Presidio reforestation.

Wood Line is conceived as a celebration of the Presidio’s historic forest and is being sponsored through the FOR-SITE Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the creation, understanding, and exhibition of art about place. Wood Line will deteriorate over time and is not conceived as a permanent addition to the Presidio landscape. Similar pieces by the artist have lasted anywhere from five to twenty years. The first phase of Wood Line is envisioned as a pilot project, allowing the artist to experiment with his approach to the work and provide the public an opportunity to experience and react to it.

Wood Line Review Process

In accordance with the adopted Presidio Art Collections Manual, the Presidio Trust sought public input for the proposed Wood Line installation from February 11 to March 22, 2010. It also sought review from a panel of art professionals and subject matter experts. The documents below summarize both of those efforts.  In addition, the proposal underwent required historic and environmental compliance. In summer 2010, the Presidio Trust board of directors reviewed the Wood Line proposal, including the input from the public and art review panel, as well as compliance materials to determine if it will be pursued. In July 2010, the Presidio Trust board approved the project. If you have any questions, please contact the Public Affairs office at (415) 561-5418.
