Access for Visitors with Disabilities

A sketch by Art Zendarski of Crissy Field Overlook. Many of the Presidio’s trails utilize former Army roads, sidewalks, or undesignated pathways that evolved over time without consideration for trail design or accessibility. One of our goals is to upgrade and expand the trail network to increase accessibility and provide a world-class and sustainable trail experience for all visitors.

New overlooks and overlook approaches are designed to meet or exceed federal specifications, to the extent that they apply. While there are currently no federal accessibility standards that apply to most outdoor areas, trails or trail segments are being designed according to the suggestions in federal guidelines proposed by the Access Board, the Accessibility Guidelines for Outdoor Developed Areas, wherever possible. Although these have not been issued as final guidelines or adopted as federal standards, we draw on upon them as a guide to current best practices.

Visitors of all abilities should be aware of the uniqueness of the Presidio. It is unlike many other local parks and recreational areas. The terrain can be rugged. Many of the irreplaceable cultural, natural, and scenic resources that led to the park’s preservation also make it a special place for those who visit. We are working hard to welcome all visitors to the incomparable experiences at the Presidio. Knowing your requirements and limitations is recommended in order to make the most of your Presidio visit.

We are in the process of updating not only the trail system but this website to help people plan and enjoy their visits to the park. Refer to individual trail and overlook descriptions for additional information.

The Presidio Promenade, Crissy Field Overlook, and National Cemetery Overlooks are our first test cases in providing additional web-based information on the accessibility features.  Information about accessibility features of other trails and overlooks will be added at a later date. We welcome your constructive comments and suggestions to make this site more helpful (email presidio@presidiotrust.gov). Please note that new construction and upgrades will be ongoing for many years. This website will continually be updated with new information, so please visit frequently and contact us if you need additional information!
