A unique and little known chapter in Chinese and Jewish history comes to life in this exhibit of photographs, documents and memorabilia. Between 1840 and 1949, Shanghai was an open city that did not require passports to enter. Three distinct streams of Jewish refugees found sanctuary there and in other Chinese cities where they lived in harmony with their Chinese neighbors. Among them were Sephardic merchants from Iraq, Russian Jews escaping czarist pogroms and later the Russian Revolution, and European Jews escaping Nazi persecution.
This program is part of the Shanghai Celebration, a year-long, Bay Area-wide collaboration and associated exhibitions, films, performances, lectures, and other events. Visit www.shanghaicelebration.com. The cornerstone of the Celebration is the Asian Art Museum's presentation of Shanghai, a major exhibition examining the visual culture of one of China's most cosmopolitan cities, scheduled for February 12 to September 5, 2010.
