Presidio Eats: Healthy Eats in the Park

Friday, Jan 06, 2017 Category Food and Drink

After a season of eating like a glutton – can you say, "Pie. Pie. And more pie, please?" – it's time to take it down a notch. But there isn't any reason food has to be boring. If you're looking for healthy options in the park, we've got great ideas for you.

TRANSIT – "Awesome" Avocado Toast

Yes, we live in a "post-toast" city, where everyone likes some version of an open-faced sandwich on the menu. But have you tried TRANSIT's avocado toast? Because this one's a little special, if we do say so ourselves. This version is robust slice of whole grain bread with sliced avocado and creamy ricotta cheese topped with a selection of tasty herbs, veggies, and an egg. Served 7:30 until 10:30 am, it'll put you back $8, but you'll actually get more than toast. This is a meal. The view of the Golden Gate Bridge is also generous and absolutely free.

Arguello – "Scrumptious" Shrimp Taco

Have you heard about the new "Taco Cleanse" craze hitting the nation? Well, we aren't ones to argue against science…and eating tacos all day. If you're a fan of this plan, stop by Arguello's "Make Tuesdays Better," where you have a choice of three taco truck-style tacos for $10. They typically have 3-4 tasty options available, including a daily special, but one of the regulars is their shrimp taco. These guys have all the right fixings – grilled shrimp with a light, ginger-tinged slaw and a creamy, lime-infused dressing make these taste a little like heaven. Or at least a healthy, light, and fresh cloud of delight.

The Walt Disney Family Museum's café's "Beetiful" Beet and Grain Salad

We hear the "grain bowls" are big with the kids…or at least the BIG kids (aka "adults") out there. If you're in the park and looking for an option that will keep you on the right track and keeping up with your own kids, you might check out the Walt Disney Family Museum's café's beet and grain salad. It's got bulgar wheat, tart wedges of beets, dice-size chunks of feta and chopped parsley all dressed in a vinaigrette. And the price is just right at $6 a serving and generous enough to keep you going.

Café Rx's "Ample" Apple Salad

If you haven't stopped by Café Rx located inside the Tides Thoreau Center, you've been seriously missing out. Café Rx is a walk-up weekday café with an extensive menu that includes healthy portions, classics, and innovative items with a Latin flair.

If you're looking to start the year off right, why not go with the GIGANTIC apple salad. It's a play on a classic Waldorf and comprised of a combination of crisp apple, goat cheese, toasted walnuts, and organic mixed greens, all dressed with their house vinaigrette. You can add grilled, free-range chicken for $2.50 or keep it vegetarian for $9.50.
