Presidio of San Francisco (June 19, 2006) -- The Presidio
Trust is proud to sponsor, Plants + Insects/Art + Science,
an exhibition at the Presidio Officers’ Club, August 25 to November 19,
2006. Please join us for an opening reception sponsored by Spur
Projects: an outpost for contemporary art, from 6 to 8 p.m. on
August 25.
The exhibit features the work of two amazing
artists of the natural world. Through the Green Fuse: the
Cameraless Plant Photography of Robert Buelteman presents 26
striking color photographs of plants made without camera or lens from
the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. The Lives of Insects: the
Close-up Photography of Edward S. Ross reveals a beautiful
hidden world.
The last gallery in the exhibit is the Hive, a
kid-friendly place where families engage in minds-on and hands-on
learning activities. Learn how scientists name things, about insect
evolution and flowering plants, and the important role insects play in
sustaining life of earth.
Talks, walks and other public programs will
complement this extraordinary exhibit. Wednesday, August 30th
Robert Buelteman presents Photography without the Camera,
from 7- 8 p.m. at the Officers’ Club. And on Saturday, August
26th Damien Raffa, Presidio Trust naturalist, will offer a
hands-on outdoor family program about plants and insects native to the
Presidio.
The Presidio shelters 300 native plant species, 16
of which are rare or endangered, and hundreds of insect species that the
Trust is just beginning to inventory. A study in 2005 revealed that
close to 60 species of bees thrive in the Presidio.
