Biological Science Technician (Seasonal) - 4 positions
 
The Presidio Trust is a Federal government corporation that manages and protects the Presidio of San Francisco.  The Trust is now accepting applications for the following Federal excepted-service position. 
 
BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN (Seasonal)--  4 Vacancies
Works in the Office of Planning, Projects & Programs, Division of Conservation, Stewardship, and Research and reports to the Natural Resources Stewardship Coordinator; performs field resources management work in native plant restoration, protection, inventorying and monitoring; installs and maintains native plants with attention to the ecological requirements of each species; controls invasive plants using a variety of methods.  Methods will be modified for safety and to choose the appropriate technique for each species; implements monitoring protocols to track rare plants and characterize plant communities at restoration and reference sites; collects and organizes field data for tracking work performed and as part of monitoring events; while standard methods, practices, and procedures are available to reference, the incumbent is frequently required to use judgment to make adjustments; generally a member of a field crew but also works leading volunteers or assisting with volunteer programs; some work may also be alone; assists with the tool inventory and maintenance program; installs, operates, and maintains resource management tools; participates in the Integrated Pest Management Program at the Presidio, which may include using chainsaws, saws, weed whips, flamers and obtaining a Qualified Applicator’s Certificate from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation and applying herbicides; provides advice, assistance, and training to students, student conservation assistants, and volunteers involved in resource management projects and field research; provides information to other employees and visitors about the natural resource management program. May develop and present related interpretive programs to the public.  Temporary, part-time position, not to exceed one year.  Benefits not included.
 
Requires Associate’s degree; bachelor’s degree desirable.  Requires knowledge of established practices, procedures, and techniques of the biological sciences; knowledge of routine natural resource management practices, methods, and procedures; basic understanding of natural resource management principles and techniques to support, understand, and relate results to the broader natural resource function; ability to communicate information in a clear and concise manner, including the ability to develop reports and present information; knowledge of vegetation management tools and equipment, and how to maintain them; knowledge of safety procedures in vegetation management;  requires strenuous physical activity including standing, walking, climbing, lifting and carrying heavy object; requires repetitive tasks performed outside, sometimes in inclement weather; may require use of power tools including chainsaws and application of herbicide while wearing a Tyvek suit; field work includes exposure to extreme weather and terrain conditions, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, snakes, and wild animals; laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals.
