Archaeological artifacts from the Presidio are curated at the Presidio Archaeology Lab. Artifacts in the collection come from excavations in the park, most notably from the site of El Presidio de San Francisco.
The collection includes materials such as ceramic house wares, architectural fragments, animal bone and plant remains, and other artifacts relating to personal, domestic and military life in the Presidio. The artifacts span multiple eras, from prehistory until the early twentieth century, with the majority of objects being from the period between Spanish settlement in 1776 and the Civil War in the 1860s.
The collection also includes archival material such as reports, journals and photographs documenting archaeological excavations. The image above contains a cross section of objects, eras and sites represented in the collection.
