Audubon Christmas Bird Count
Three people watch birds through binoculars at Crissy Field

Imagine 4,000 gulls descending upon a large herring run. That’s exactly what Presidio participants witnessed during the Christmas Bird Count, held on December 27, 2012, at the Presidio.

About 104 species were sighted in the Presidio during the 113th occurance of this annual event, which was hosted by the Golden Gate Audubon Society and the Presidio Trust. Near the end, Presidio participants watched as thousands of gulls took advantage of a massive herring run.

After the day’s activities wrapped up, participants gathered to share their results. Overall, 179 species were spotted in San Francisco - a new record over the previous one of 177 species.
