Overview

For more than two centuries the Presidio was a major military post. Rising prominently above San Francisco Bay, it earned the title “defender of the Golden Gate.” Today, the 1,500-acre Presidio is a new kind of national park – a place of natural beauty, a site of great historic significance, and a unique public resource where people live, work, and play.

The New Presidio Parklands Project is a significant chapter in the Presidio’s ongoing evolution. A portion of the elevated highway that cut through the Presidio for seven decades is being replaced with an at-grade roadway hidden from public view by discrete tunnels.

This creates a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to establish a magnificent 13-acre space that integrates the waterfront with the Presidio’s historic core via a new landscape from which visitors can experience the Presidio, access the shoreline, and view the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. The New Presidio Parklands Project encompasses three interconnected sites:

  • A dramatic designed landscape to be created above the roadway tunnels
  • A revitalized Crissy Field Center Youth Campus with a “Learning Landscape”
  • A reimagined Presidio Visitor Center

Our goal is to create a welcoming place – inspired by history and contemporary needs – that embraces cultural diversity, creativity, learning, fitness, and fun. We invite local and national communities to join us in shaping the new parklands and in sharing this experience with family and friends.

Five internationally-renowned teams with experience in urban parks, environmental education, community programming, and the arts have been invited to facilitate the “imagine phase” of the New Presidio Parklands Project, a major effort that will unfold over coming years. They are:

The Presidio Trust is the lead agency for this project, directing the planning, design, and construction effort and managing community outreach and engagement. The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, the non-profit partner to the Trust and the National Park Service, serves as the philanthropic and community engagement partner and supports park restoration and enhancement, education, and visitor service projects and programs. The National Park Service is engaged as the manager of the adjacent parklands at Crissy Field and as a partner in interpretation, visitor services, and programming.
