The prosperity of ancient Pompeii, home to perhaps 20,000, depended in good part upon Mount Vesuvius, which ensured mineral-rich volcanic soil and hence abundant wheat for shipping to Rome. Ironically, in 79 AD Vesuvius erupted, destroying the city. Its rediscovery in the 18th century galvanized Europe. Today, however, this unique site is once again seriously endangered. Join Judith Harris, archaeology writer based in Rome, Italy and the author of Pompeii Awakened: A Story of Rediscovery, as she discusses the life of Pompeii.
Following the lecture, Harris will be available to sign her book, Pompeii Awakened: A Story of Rediscovery.
