How many different kinds of birds did you see today? In our busy urban lives we are not likely to take notice of the diversity of wildlife in our daily outdoor experience. Without realizing it, you probably crossed the path of several dozen species of birds that find habitat in parks and urban landscapes. But what if you were to devote an entire day focused solely upon looking for birds? That’s been an annual tradition of Audubon Society since 1900, now taking place in San Francisco and hundreds of other locations across North and South America every December. Hence the name, the Christmas Bird Count.
On Tuesday, December 27, teams will explore natural and urban areas in all corners of the city during the day and then convene for a “countdown” at the Presidio’s Log Cabin in the evening. Owing to the diversity of habitats, the Presidio typically has the highest number of species sighted. In recent years more 100 species have been sighted throughout the park, ranging from diminutive Anna’s Hummingbirds to majestic Peregrine Falcons.
